Grooming a great dane - shedding & hair loss. compared to other short haired breeds, great danes shed like about the same as any. shedding ebbs and flows and seems to increase a bit each spring. of course if your dog is suffering from skin problems, nutritional or contact allergies, shedding can be severe.. Some danes just shed more than others and this can be an inherited genetic trait. poor thyroid levels have been known to cause excessive shedding and droopy eyes, skin, etc. my suggestion as always with bathing a dane is don't, unless there is a need to bathe, dog rolled in something stinky, dog smells, etc.. If you want a no-shedding dog, get one that has hair, but be aware that your grooming bill will be high. i consider danes to be low maintenance coat wise, other larger breeds that won't make a mess are dalmatians shar-pei's, standard poodles (reread groomer $), bur absolutely don't shy away from danes for their coats..

Great dane sheds a lot, but his coat is easy to keep in top condition with regular brushing. use a firm bristle brush and shampoo as needed. regular brushing keeps your great dane's coat healthy and clean, and cuts down on the number of baths he needs..
